Education & Training in International Health

AIHI delivers a growing program of undergraduate, postgraduate and professional education and training in international health. This program focuses on strengthening the skills of health workers to respond to their priority health needs, both practitioners based in development settings and Australian international health professionals. AIHI works with local partners in the Asia Pacific region to deliver innovative training on topics including multi sectoral approaches to HIV/AIDS, primary health care, adolescent health, health program planning and evaluation, safe motherhood, disability and tobacco control.

Research in International Health

AIHI is focussed on building capacity in the Asia Pacific region to conduct and disseminate public health research. AIHI provides technical assistance to strengthen the evidence base for effective health planning. This includes rapid assessments, situation analyses, planning community interventions, and impact assessments. AIHI provides training in qualitative and quantitative research methods. AIHI also supports research degree students and visiting fellows through supervising and mentoring.

Development Assistance

AIHI contributes to Development Assistance programs and projects in the health sector in partnership with national and international organisations. This contribution includes program design, management and evaluation, capacity building for partner organisations, and provision of quality health specialists to strengthen the health systems of developing nations. AIHI achieves this through technical assistance in the design, management and implementation of projects; advanced education and workforce training; leadership in health policy and strategic planning; capacity development in public health research; and through technical assistance to strengthen programs of prevention, care and treatment of the major causes of ill-health, death and disability in the Asia-Pacific region.

Leadership & Advocacy

Through a series of public forums and seminars, AIHI provides leadership in response to critical and neglected health issues. AIHI initiates dialogue with policy-makers and is commissioned to contribute to policy review and development on national responses to HIV/AIDS and other current issues in international health. Internationally, AIHI works towards sustainable health outcomes through involvement in health program planning and reform.
