Associate Professor Peter Deutschmann

Associate Professor Peter Deutschmann, originally a surgeon
by training, has been involved in primary health care in international
settings for over two decades. He and his family lived in India
for fourteen years where he worked in a community hospital that
integrated primary and secondary health care services for a population
of 20,000 in an Himalayan district of the state of Uttar Pradesh.
Peter was also involved in pioneering work for community-based responses
to HIV/AIDS among injecting drug users and their partners in the
North Eastern region of India.
After returning to Australia, Peter has worked to support national
and community-based responses to HIV/AIDS and maternal and child
health care. He has been involved in strengthening NGO responses
to HIV/AIDS in India, Burma and China; provided advisory support
to the Australian aid program in India, Nepal, Indonesia and Papua
New Guinea; and facilitated national-level, HIV/AIDS strategic planning
in Pakistan, Nepal and Papua New Guinea. Peter with extensive experience
in international health, has been Team Leader or Project Director
on 15 donor-funded projects and missions in Southeast, South and
North Asia and the Pacific for agencies that include AusAID, USAID,
DFID, UNICEF, WHO, UNAIDS and the World Bank.
